How Rhinoplasty Goals Differ for Men and Women

Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure among both men and women, resulting in an attractive nose that blends well with the rest of their facial features. According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics, nose surgery is the second most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S., with about 221,000 procedures performed in 2013. Celebrities have contributed to this popularity, with stars like Patrick Dempsey, Cameron Diaz and Heidi Montag admitting to having had nose surgery. In addition to improving the aesthetics, the procedure can also enhance the nasal function. However, men and women have different goals when it comes to nose reshaping. Let’s see how.

Male noses have a different bone density and structure and men would be more concerned about shape rather than size. Compared to women, men’s noses would have stronger, heavier cartilages and bone along with thicker skin. They would need a more acute nasofrontal and a nasolabial angle. Also, they would prefer a longer nose, a straighter profile with a higher bridge and a more sharply defined, angular tip with projection.

Coming to women, they too may be interested in such changes, but only to a smaller extent. Taller women with longer faces would look better with a straighter profile while a smaller softer nose is usually recommended for smaller, slim women. Also, a thinner and more delicate nose bridge would suit women in contrast with a wider nose bridge which is suitable for men.

Even with all these differences in the aesthetics of the male and female nose, an ideal nose is always one that is in harmony with the rest of the facial features. Moreover, shaping the nasal structure to meet cosmetic goals requires a high level of artistry. Only an experienced plastic surgeon with special skills in performing rhinoplasty can provide optimal, customized results.
