Botox

The cosmetic form of a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin, Botox is a vital ingredient in plastic surgery in reducing or eliminating visible signs of aging on the face such as forehead creases, neck bands, crow’s feet appearing near the eyes, and frown lines. Botox, administered as a non-surgical injection, blocks the nerve impulses and temporarily paralyzes the muscles in the particular region of the skin, preventing wrinkles from forming. The result is a younger, fresher and smoother look to the face.

As it also blocks involuntary muscle contractions, other symptoms caused by muscle activity such as muscle spasms in the eyes and neck can also be relieved by Botox. The other applications of Botox are in treating cervical dystonia, blepharospasm or excessive blinking, axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, achalasia and migraine, all of which are caused by excessive activity of muscles. In cosmetic application, the Botox injection is generally effective for around 4 months. Wrinkles would be prevented from developing during this period, following which the injection must be taken again to maintain the smooth appearance.

Botox to Treat Variety of Conditions

Botolinum toxin type A has also been known to cure (though not approved by FDA for these purposes yet) stroke; trauma; cerebral palsy; Parkinson’s disease; multiple sclerosis and other spastic disorders related to a problem with the central nervous system; anal fissure; incontinence resulting from an overactive bladder; incontinence caused by neurogenic bladder; pediatric incontinence; focal dystonias affecting the vocal cords, limbs, face or jaw; diabetic neuropathy; TMJ pain disorders; excessive salivation; healing of wounds; vocal cord dysfunction; and reducing the size of the lower jaw by reducing the Masseter muscle; as well as chronic musculoskeletal pain; and chronic headache. Botox could also bring about weight loss by increasing the gastric emptying time.

Known to be one of the most lethal toxins occurring naturally, butolinum toxin causes botulism, a variety of food poisoning, when it contaminates food not stored properly, that has been infected by spores containing the Clostridium botulinum vegetative bacteria variety. As the botulinum toxins attach themselves to nerve endings and block the release of acetylcholine that triggers muscle contractions, botulism could also result in paralysis leading to death, depending on the area affected. Fatality generally results from breathing irregularities caused by the toxins preventing contraction of muscles in the chest.

As with any cosmetic care injection or medication, Botox could cause side effects that needn’t be severe in all cases. These include paralysis of an unintended group of muscles, and allergic reaction, and depend on the pressure applied by the clinician to the injected area. Mild paralysis of the face generally results in the inability to close the eye and inappropriate facial expression. These generally wear out in around 10 days. Since botulinum toxin is applied only in marginal doses during Botox injections, the degree of toxicity is extremely less. The worst reported side effects of the cosmetic application of botulinum toxin are allergic reactions, muscle weakness, headaches, dysphagia, focal facial paralysis, and flu-like symptoms. Symptoms of botulism are certainly not among these.

Of the 28 deaths caused by Botox between 1989 and 2003, as reported by a paper in the September 2005 edition of the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, none were attributed to cosmetic applications, though the FDA warned on February 8, 2008 that the ability of Botox to spread to other areas from the injection site could lead to respiratory problems and death, but only in extreme cases. In January 2009, the Canadian government also issued a warning that stated that the spread of Botox to other areas of the body could cause swallowing difficulty, muscle weakness, speech disorders and respiratory issues.

Botox - A Practical and Safe Solution

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A in treating frown lines and other facial signs of aging coupled with the advantage of a simple injection process has made Botox quite popular among all who seek to look young as they advance in years. Patients only need to take a break from work for an hour or so for a Botox injection and then return immediately following the injection process. Botox, along with Juvederm, the hyaluronic acid-based injectable filler, are used in plastic surgery procedures such as eyebrow lift, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty and rhytidectomy.

Botox is manufactured in the United States by Allergan Inc and is used for cosmetic and therapeutic applications. Cosmetic conditions and focal dystonias are also treated by Dysport, another therapeutic formulation of botulinum toxin type A, manufactured in Ireland. Neuronox, a type A toxin, is manufactured by South Korea’s Medy-Tox Inc.

Generally, Botox treatment is free from serious side effects and is therefore a practical and safe solution to get rid of those wrinkles and look young. It’s a quick process, simple, and doesn’t hamper your routine though a few days of rest are always recommended following the administration of the injection. At bodySCULPTŪ, the Botox treatment is performed on an outpatient basis at our all-inclusive plastic surgery practice in Manhattan, New York City (NYC).
