Juvederm

The injectable filler Juvederm is used in plastic surgery to eliminate visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and nasolabial folds on the face. Manufactured by Allergan, Inc., Juvederm is available in gel form and consists of hyaluronic acid. Juvederm, when injected, releases hyaluronic acid into the wrinkles and nasolabial folds. The acid fills up the irregularities and smoothens them, bringing about the youthful appearance.

Juvederm - Effective Injectable Fillers

One of the newest injectable fillers in the market, Juvederm is FDA-approved and is sometimes used along with Botox in plastic surgery procedures. Botox, also manufactured by Allergan, succeeds in relaxing the facial muscles, but can’t fill up the deeper folds. The results of Juvederm last longer, up to a year. Juvederm has also been proved more effective than the other dermal fillers, particularly those using collagen. It also takes lesser time to inject, only 15 minutes while the effects last for a year.

Much of Juvederm’s reputation hinges on the tests conducted before the product was launched in the US market. One of them was conducted on 146 subjects who were given Juvederm injection in one of their nasolabial folds and the bovine-based dermal filler Zyplast in their other nasolabial fold, and tested for 24 weeks. While 88 percent of the individuals tested preferred Juvederm, scientific tests also proved that Juvederm was more effective in leveling the nasolabial fold than Zyplast. The findings were further reinforced by another study conducted on 293 individuals. It also proved the safety of the hyaluronic acid-based injectable filler.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance occurring in the skin, adding volume to the skin and facilitating hydration. Being a natural substance, the risk factors are less. Side effects generally include swelling, itching, redness and tenderness in the area of injection. For 24 hours after the injection, the patient should keep away from alcoholic beverages, excessive exposure to heat and strenuous exercising. This would help minimize redness, itching or swelling at the site of the injection. However, there could be temporary swelling, pain, redness, bumps or firmness that might last for a week or less. The effects of Juvederm can be felt immediately after the injection, in terms of smoothened wrinkles and even leveled nasolabial folds. This is all you would usually need for a year, after which the injection must be administered again if the youthful look is to be maintained. However, after the main injection treatment minor treatments such as “touch up” sessions may be required if the initial results aren’t fully up to expectations. Juvederm is strictly not recommended for individuals who’ve had multiple severe allergies, anaphylaxis and allergies to bacterial proteins which are gram-positive. Juvederm in Two Formulations

Allergan manufactures Juvederm in two formulations – Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus. Juvederm is manufactured in a unique process that gives it a greater concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. The higher concentration makes it more effective, producing results lasting for up to a year. But Juvederm is one step better for facelifts and anti-ageing as it contains hyaluronic acid that can absorb up to 1000 times its weight in water, helping to add the much needed new volume under the sagging skin and lift it up, enabling even nasolabial folds to disappear. Hyaluronic acid’s binding with the material supporting human facial skin, collagen, as well as elastin, helps feed more nutrients to the skin. All this, Allergen claims, would lend a fresher, smoother and more natural appearance to the skin.

Studies conducted by the University of Michigan on a dermal filler with a close chemical relation to Juvederm, Restylane, revealed that hyaluronic acid enables the skin to create new collagen by stretching the existing fibroblasts (a type of skin cells). Probably the only disadvantage of Juvederm is that it is expensive. This, along with the possibility of minor “touch up” treatments could take the costs further up. However, these factors can’t mask the long lasting effects of Juvederm in bringing about and maintaining the youthful appearance.
