Spending time outdoors is an important part of a healthy lifestyle for seniors because it encourages light exercise and promotes socializing. There are many great outdoor activities for older adults. Outdoor activities or workouts that benefits seniors include:

  • Outdoor Walking: Experts recommend exercise in a natural setting like a park or green space instead of a paved location. Walking offers great physical benefits and when the individual is in the company of others, it can promote a more positive outlook and better mental health. Regular walking is good for reducing the risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes, keeping the body physically strong, and improving balance and coordination. Brisk “conversation” walking is a great activity that most people can do safely. Use a route that goes on sidewalks or a trail that is safe for pedestrians.
  • Gardening and Fishing: These are the most popular outdoor activities for older adults. Gardening promotes light aerobic activity and can be incorporated easily into a daily routine, to stay active and maintain strength and flexibility. Fishing is another enjoyable activity for seniors who are skilled at it. Whether on a dock or pontoon, fishing boat, or from shore, this is a relaxing way to get outdoors and socialize.
  • Picnic: Picnicking is the best way to soak up some Vitamin D. Carry a meal or a simple snack with a healthy side. Fresh air and good conversation are great for both seniors and caregivers. Picnic games for senior citizens promote somelight exercise. Getting sufficient Vitamin D can reduce the risk of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and heart attacks, and is also thought to improve mood.
  • Playing with grandchildren: A fun way to enjoy a bit of outdoor exercise is by spending time with grandchildren. Playing a basketball or soccer will keep you fit. Even just going for a walk with your grandchildren is an excellent way to spend an afternoon while also enjoying some fresh air.
  • Yoga and meditation: Fresh air and warm weather make yoga and meditation easy and enjoyable. If your body is feeling inflexible, yoga could be the key to revitalization. Meditation, practicing relaxation skills, and shielding your mind from the noisy world around you will calm the mind.

As with anything, seniors need to be comfortable going outside. Those suffering from allergies need to take a little extra care.
