Can Fat Freezing Provide Body Contouring Results Comparable to Traditional Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most heavily requested body sculpting treatments in the world, and there are several effective surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures designed to effectively meet the body contouring goals of men and women. Non-invasive fat freezing technology is one of the latest entrants on the scene and it has become widely accepted as a method that can remove excess fat and provide superior contouring results without any anesthesia or downtime.

FDA-approved CoolSculpting uses advanced cooling technology or cryolipolysis. The treatment is simple – the body area to be contoured is placed in the fat freezing device for about an hour. The device selectively targets localized fat deposits, freezes them, and naturally removes the stubborn fat without harming the surrounding tissues or skin. There is hardly any risk of skin injury and no change in blood levels of fats

With the availability of different technologies, there are always comparisons. One question that is being asked is whether CoolSculpting treatment provides results comparable with those offered by liposuction. A review published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) says ‘yes’, but with certain clarifications. According to this report, there are three important elements when it comes to getting results comparable with liposuction for fat freezing or cryolipolysis:

  • careful treatment planning
  • treatment by a skilled practitioner
  • multiple treatment cycles

A single fat freezing session cannot yield the results similar to liposuction. Multiple treatment sessions would be needed and that too under the guidance of a skilled practitioner with good experience in the procedure.

The findings of a study performed by a group of Southern California plastic surgeons to evaluate the effectiveness of CoolSculpting which was published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal are as follows:

  • The procedure is effective in reducing subcutaneous fat volume
  • Only a few adverse events were noted such as pain, which subsided soon
  • The popularity of the procedure grew during the study period (2010-2012) with 823 percent more treatment cycles delivered in 2012
  • The procedure grew in popularity among men

On the effectiveness of the fat freezing treatment, the lead researcher said “With careful treatment planning, proper applicator placement, and multiple treatment cycles, cryolipolysis can produce results comparable to those of liposuction”.

Zeltiq, manufacturer of the Cool Sculpting device, has been named the fastest growing medical device company in Deloitte’s 2014 Technology Fast 500. The company credits its success to Cool Sculpting’s ability to produce, safe, surgery-free results. Statistics provide proof of its growing popularity – more than 1 million procedures have been performed worldwide.
