Plastic surgery procedures have increased in popularity during the past few years. Advanced techniques and technologies have enhanced the reliability and safety of plastic surgery with the result that more women and men than ever before are requesting aesthetic improvements. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has reported a dramatic rise in the demand for cosmetic treatments in 2013, up by 17% from 2012.

BAAPS comments on this dramatic increase as the most impressive rise in demand since the recession in 2008. In fact, the audit shows an “impressive double-digit rise in all cosmetic procedures”, with the distinction that a single individual procedure saw a decrease on the year. Up to 50,122 cosmetic procedures were performed in 2013. Liposuction topped the list with a hike in demand by 41%. Younger people of average age 33 were seen to have gone in for body slimming and anti-ageing treatments. Men showed the most interest in rhinoplasty or nose jobs, while breast enhancement was the most popular choice among women.

The BAAPS statistics on the plastic surgery procedures performed in the UK last year are as follows

  • Breast augmentation up 13% to 11,135
  • Eyelid surgery up 14% to 7,808
  • Face and neck lifts up 13% to 6,380
  • Breast reduction up 12.5% to 5,476
  • Nose jobs up 17% to 4,878
  • Liposuction up 41% to 4,326
  • Tummy tuck up 16% to 3,466
  • Fat transfer operations up 14.5% to 3,302
  • Brow lifts up 17% to 2,138
  • Ear corrections up 14% to 1,213

In the U.S., too, the demand for plastic surgery is rising. As per the annual plastic surgery procedural statistics released by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 15.1 million cosmetic surgery procedures, including both minimally-invasive and surgical, were performed in the United States in 2013, marking a fourth consecutive year of growth. The year 2013 showed an increase in demand for cosmetic surgery procedures, up by 3% from 2012.
