Selfies Encouraging Cosmetic Surgery

In this era of social communication, selfies are a great way to introduce yourself or show people what you are doing and how you are feeling. And as the selfie trend grows, the demand for cosmetic surgery is also growing, finds a study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The widespread use of smartphones equipped with cameras and image-based social media sites such as Instagram, Snapchat and the iPhone app Selfie.im are making people scrutinize and become more critical of their own image.

The AAFPRS study which covered 2,700 members noted that “one in three facial plastic surgeons surveyed saw an increase in requests for procedures due to patients being more self aware of looks in social media”. Up to 13 percent of the respondents in the survey identified two major reasons for the rise in the demand for cosmetic surgery procedures – increased photo sharing on social media sites and people disappointment with the way they look in their selfies. The report said there was a 10 percent rise in nose-related procedures from the previous year, a 6 percent rise in eyelid surgery, and a 7 percent increase in hair transplants.

The survey also reports that women accounted for 81 percent of the demand for face-based surgical procedures such as nose surgery, eyelid surgery, and facelift. In addition to that, mommy-makeovers seem to be a rising trend, with women requesting liposuction surgery to get back their youthful bodies. About 69 percent of individuals who were bullied about their looks underwent procedures and 31 percent, to prevent being bullied.

Many individuals approach a plastic surgeon with a photo of a celebrity or model they wish to resemble, though this may not be a practical goal as these photos are usually enhanced. If you are considering cosmetic surgery, remember that you need to have realistic goals. And don’t compromise when it comes to your safety – make sure you consult an experienced plastic surgeon in an accredited plastic practice.
