The chin has a very important role in enhancing the balance and symmetry of the face. Weight gain and aging can cause excess fat to get accumulated in the neck and chin areas, giving rise to a ‘double chin’ which can make a person look heavier and/or older than he or she actually is. The good news is that this submental fat can be successfully addressed with the new FDA-approved injectable treatment, Kybella. This novel non-surgical treatment dissolves away the excess fat under the chin area. Also known as ATX-101, this injection helps you achieve a more attractive, youthful-looking facial profile without the need for invasive facial surgery or liposuction.
How Kybella Works
Manufactured by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, Kybella is an injectable drug that reduces moderate to severe fat on the upper neck, known as a double chin. The drug’s active ingredient is a naturally occurring molecule called deoxycholic acid that dissolves submental or under-chin fat, allowing plastic surgeons to reshape the area without surgery.
Each treatment requires multiple injections. Up to a maximum of 50 injections – of 0.2 mL each (up to a total of 10 mL), and spaced 1-cm apart – are administered in a single treatment. This is not a one-time procedure and patients may require up to 6 single treatments and spaced at least one month apart for optimal results.
Kybella is administered using a thin-needle like that used in Botox injections. The treatment is simple, comfortable, and requires no anesthesia or sedation of the treatment site. Bruising, swelling, pain, and small, firm areas around the injection sites and also temporary numbness may be present after the procedure. However, all of these conditions improve over time.
People with a lot of excess skin under their chin and neck or have an infection in the treatment site are not good candidates for this injectable treatment.
By permanently destroying the fat cells, this treatment can effectively resolve a heavy neck or jaw line. When compared to chin liposuction, the recovery period for this non-surgical treatment for a double chin is also faster. The downtime is minimal with lesser discomfort, bruising and swelling. There in no need for any anesthesia, large incisions, stitches or bandages.
The success of the procedure depends mainly on the skill and experience of the plastic surgeon. So it is important to find a qualified plastic surgeon to perform this treatment. Reliable surgeons will evaluate prospective patients carefully and explain the risks and side effects associated with the treatment so that they can take an informed decision.
