Brazilian Butt Lift under Local Anesthesia - A Safe and Effective Procedure

Brazilian butt lift is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures today, thanks to the influence of celebrity selfies on Instagram. Brazilian butt lift in NYC involves using a woman’s own fat to enhance the size and shape of her posterior. Today, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. Invented by leading NYC plastic surgeons Drs. Spero Theodorou and Christopher T. Chia of bodySCULPT in NYC, the Brazilian Butt Lift under local anesthesia (BBLULA) is a safer option than BBL under general anesthesia.

Women prefer buttock augmentation with fat grafting as it is safer than implant-based butt augmentation and can provide natural-looking results. The procedure involves two components – liposuction and fat grafting. The first is fat removal, where advanced liposuction techniques are used to extract the needed fat from the body areas such as the mid back of bra rolls, flanks, stomach, and thighs. In second step, the fat tissues are processed and injected into the buttocks to enhance the shape and appearance of the buttocks. A skilled surgeon can shape the back area just under the curvature of the top of the buttocks in such as way that it decreases waist size and improves the projection of the buttocks even before the fat is injected.

However, it was found that BBL with general anesthesia can have grave consequences when fat is injected into and below the muscle either intentionally or unintentionally. The fat may enter the bloodstream and cause the heart and lungs to fail and lead to death. Though there are several theories as to why this happens, one of the plausible explanations is that when the gluteal (buttock) muscle is penetrated by the fat grafting cannula, the large veins underneath are somehow damaged and that fat inadvertently enters the bloodstream.

A recently released emergency rule is aimed at making BBL safer for patients. The advisory by the Multi-Society Task Force for Safety in Gluteal Fat Grafting (ASAPS, ASPS, ISAPS, IFATS, ISPRES), which came into effect on June 17, prohibits surgeons from injecting fat into or below a patient’s gluteal muscles due to the risk of piercing the gluteal vein.

This warning is for people who do not do this innovative new procedure under local anesthesia. Brazilian Butt Lift under Local Anesthesia is a relatively short procedure that allows patients to remain awake throughout the procedure, heal faster, and get back quickly to their normal routine. BBLULA presents minimal complications or risks for the patient. BBLULA adheres to the new safety guidelines because it’s not possible for fat to go into the muscle when the patient is awake.

The efficiency and outcomes of BBL surgery in New York City largely depends on the plastic surgeon who performs it. That’s why it is critical to choose a plastic surgeon who is specialized in the procedure.  Skilled surgeons with education, expertise and experience in liposuction and fat grafting can provide safe treatment and optimal results.
