The August 2013 issue of the plastic surgery journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open featured a study conducted by Dr. Spero Theodorou of bodySCULPT® plastic surgery practice in Manhattan. The study entitled “Radiofrequency-assisted Liposuction for Arm Contouring: Technique under Local Anesthesia” proves that radiofrequency-assisted liposuction (RFAL) may improve skin retraction with a satisfactory aesthetic result without skin resection and the resultant scar, unlike brachioplasty.
The main objective of the study was to highlight bodySCULPT’s experience in RFAL arm contouring under local anesthesia. Forty patients who underwent RFAL of bilateral arms under local anesthesia in this AAAASF accredited plastic surgery practice from April 2009 through February 2012 were taken as volunteers for the study. The procedure performed on these patients was completed without any major complications or morbidity. BodyTite is one such technology developed by InMode.
The patient satisfaction survey held after the procedure indicated that most patients had minimal or no discomfort with the injection of local anesthesia, application of radiofrequency energy, or aspiration of fat. The majority of the patients were also satisfied with their contouring result and degree of skin tightening.
Third-party plastic surgeons were also surveyed to assess improvements in contour and skin quality with preoperative and postoperative photographs. 98% of the surgeons stated moderate, good, or excellent improvement in arm contouring while 95% stated that the skin tightening aspect was moderate, good, or excellent.
The study concluded that RFAL arm contouring done under local anesthesia is an alternative procedure with acceptably low morbidity and high patient satisfaction rates. If consistent results are to be achieved with minimal complications, factors such as anatomic details, application of the radiofrequency energy and infiltration of the local anesthetic must be given due consideration.
