Does Botox Really Work for Underarm Sweating

Botox: A Solution for Underarm Sweating

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has approved Botox injections as a treatment for excessive underarm perspiration. It functions by inhibiting a bodily chemical that causes the sweat glands to become active. The International Hyperhidrosis Society claims that Botox injections beneath the arms can cut sweating there by 82–87%. The effects may continue 4 to 12 months on average, or even up to 14 months in some circumstances. Results from underarm Botox injections often appear 2-4 days following the procedure. In most cases, the full results become apparent within two weeks.

The use of Botox was first authorized in December 1989 to treat two eye muscle diseases. In 2002, Botox cosmetic was authorized for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. And now, excessive sweating is also treated with Botox.

How Does It Work?

Botox, the brand name for the injectable drug botulinum toxin, is most well-known for its ability to reduce wrinkles. With regard to underarm sweating, Botox injections prevent the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that attaches to your sweat glands to signal the flow of perspiration. When your body temperature rises, your neurological system often causes your sweat glands to become active. Your body naturally cools itself in this way. The neurons that alert the sweat glands are overactive in persons with hyperhidrosis. Botox injections block the nerve signals responsible for sweating and thereby prevent the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. You don’t sweat if your nerves can’t communicate with your sweat glands. Botox only works where it is injected to stop sweating in that particular location.

The Procedure

Botox injections can be done in the office by a doctor who is licensed to administer Botox. In 10 minutes or less, skilled medical personnel can provide injections to both underarms. The doctor injects very tiny doses of Botox beneath the skin to perform the operation. They often inject it in a grid pattern, spaced 1-2 cm apart between each injection point. The doctor may use ice or a local anesthesia to numb the area before giving the injections. This will help reduce any discomfort or pain.

Botox injections are a simple and quick procedure done right in your doctor’s or surgeon’s office. You may be requested to wear a short-sleeved shirt and avoid shaving your underarms for 2 or 3 days prior to your appointment. If you take blood thinners, your doctor may ask you to stop for a few days before your injections to prevent bruising. Tell your doctor about any medications you’re taking and don’t stop taking any medications unless your doctor tells you to.

Botox functions by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell your glands to start sweating; the underarm region’s touch and sensibility are unaffected. For the duration of the Botox treatment for underarm sweating, only one office visit is required. Your healthcare professional uses a very small needle to inject a tiny amount of Botox each time, just beneath the skin’s surface. Botox is not a long-term cure for excessive sweating beneath the arms, though. You would need recurring injections because a single treatment only lasts 4 to 12 months.
