Why Breast Augmentation is a Popular Cosmetic Surgery Option

Breast augmentation is undoubtedly one of the most popular cosmetic surgery options for women, especially in United States. Breast enhancement is listed second in the worldwide plastic surgery list by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Here are the main reasons cited for the growing appeal of cosmetic breast surgery:

  • The extremely high satisfaction rate is an important factor. A recent study published by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) noted that 98% of women surveyed said the breast surgery outcome had exceeded their expectations. Up to 90% reported enhanced self-esteem as well.
  • Unlike certain other cosmetic surgery procedures, breast augmentation surgery involves a comparatively shorter recovery period. Most women can resume normal activities soon – work and routine activity in a few days and more rigorous activity and exercise in a few weeks after recovery.
  • With FDA-approved saline and silicone breast implants, safety concerns are minimal.
  • Another attractive element is that the results of the breast augmentation with implants are long lasting. Modern implants last for years, thought they would have to replaced at some time.
  • The wide variety of choices also contributes to the popularity of breast implants. Women can choose the size and shape that best suits their physical proportions. The use of advanced 3D technology by leading plastic surgeons allows them to visualize the outcome and make an informed decision.
  • The fat transfer option has made breast enhancement popular among women who do not want implants. Excess fat from areas such as the hips, abdomen and thighs is removed via liposuction and injected into the breasts to enhance size and contour.

With an experienced plastic surgeon performing the procedure, women can be confident of safe, customized solutions to meet their aesthetic goals.

Demand for Plastic Surgery Procedures on the Rise

According to a report in Female First, new statistics from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) shows a dramatic increase in the demand for plastic surgery procedures during 2013. Figures show a 10% increase for the nose jobs, face lifts and breast implants. The star on the list was liposuction, which marked a tremendous increase in demand by about 41%. In an official statement, Baaps rated the liposuction boom “the most impressive rise in demand” since 2008.

A total of 50,122 cosmetic procedures were performed during 2013, up by 17% from the previous year. Here are the rates of increase for the top 10 plastic surgery procedures.

  • Breast augmentation up 13% to 11,135
  • Eyelid surgery up 14% to 7,808
  • Face and neck lifts up 13% to 6,380
  • Breast reduction up 12.5% to 5,476
  • Nose jobs up 17% to 4,878
  • Liposuction up 41% to 4,326
  • Tummy tucks up 16% to 3,466
  • Fat transfer operations up 14.5% to 3,302
  • Brow lifts up 17% to 2,138
  • Ear corrections up 14% to 1,213

The Baaps report says that there was a consistent demand for traditional invasive treatments, there was an increased demand for body slimming and anti-ageing treatments among younger patients of average age 33. Breast augmentation was the most popular procedure among women, while nose jobs were the top choice among men. Patients from countries like China and the Middle East contributed to the demand for non-invasive procedures such as Fraxel and Thermage. Many also sought blepharoplasty surgery or eyelid surgery to achieve a more Western look.

The increase in the demand for plastic surgery procedures is not confined to the U.K. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that 15.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2013, up by 3% from the previous year. Here too, breast augmentation topped the list of cosmetic surgery procedures.

These figures go to show the wide acceptance of the plastic surgery across the globe. Recent advancements in technology and techniques have improved safety and efficiency. Skilled plastic surgeons are providing men and women with customized treatment to achieve their aesthetic goals with minimal side effects and downtime.

Popularity of Plastic Surgery Surges with the Use of 3D Technology

Wouldn’t you want to really see the changes you can expect after your plastic surgery procedure? Well, advanced 3D technology has made this possible as seen in this Wall Street Journal video report. You don’t have to depend only on before and after pictures of other patients to imagine the outcome. The 3D imaging system allows you see what exactly your face or body will look like before you have your procedure. What’s more, 3-D technology also helps the surgeon make more precise incisions.

This is how 3D works: an image of the area to be treated is taken with a CT (computed tomography) device. The 3D printer analyzes the image data and creates a precise model for the patient to see. In addition to enhancing patient confidence, this innovative technology is sure to improve their participation in the process. The 3D images complement 2D images and show both the positives and negatives of the procedures, helping patients make the right choice. At the same time, it also allows plastic surgeons to plan more precise interventions and to reassure the patient about the outcome.

One of the popular 3D technologies used by reliable cosmetic surgeons around the globe is Axis Three technology. Dr. Spero J Theodorou, MD, the Surgical Director of bodySCULPT® plastic surgery center in Manhattan utilizes this advanced simulation system to plan and execute breast augmentation procedures. The technology is ideal for the pre-operative planning of breast implant surgery and fat transfer augmentation procedures. Axis Three’s scanner provides high quality, anatomically-accurate, 3D images of the patient’s torso so as to simulate breast surgery results. Patients can try different sized breast implants and see the likely outcomes to make the right choice.

Used in fat transfer breast enhancement, this technology helps the surgeon to estimate the amount of fat required for enhancement. Up to six simulations can be shown at one time and compared side by side at any angle. Other such imaging technologies currently in use include the TouchView system and the VECTRA 3D imaging system.

The use of 3D in plastic surgery reduces the risk of reoperation and makes the whole experience a more pleasant one for the patient. It helps the surgeon understand the patient’s expectations and provide customized procedure to help them achieve their goals. It also helps in the planning on future interventions.

Relieving patient anxiety and allowing greater surgical accuracy, new 3D technology is making plastic surgery more popular than ever.

New Study Refutes Previous Findings that Fat Returns after Liposuction

Liposuction, advertised heavily since 1974 has become a popular plastic surgery procedure to get rid of excess fat from problem areas of the body such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms and buttocks. According to the 2012 plastic surgery statistics report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 202,000 procedures were performed in 2012. Amidst its popularity, there existed a confusion that made at least some people hesitate to undergo the procedure – will fat return after liposuction?

A study in the August 2012 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) revealed that fat actually does not return in both treated and untreated areas following liposuction. The study evaluated 301 patients who had liposuction, either alone or in combination with abdominoplasty, using standardized photographs and computer-assisted measurements of body dimensions obtained preoperatively and at least three months after surgery. The study revealed no evidence of fat re-growth in treated areas of the arms, abdomen, or lower body. Upper body dimensions were also unchanged after surgery, indicating no fat redistribution. Measurements in the study do not support the concept of fat re-accumulation in treated or untreated areas of the body.

These findings refute an earlier report published in the journal Obesity that had concluded that fat returns to untreated areas of the body, especially the abdomen, shoulders, and arms within one year after liposuction. This study was done on non-obese women who underwent liposuction for their lower abdomen and thighs. The researchers had concluded that fat reappeared in other parts of the body, especially the upper abdomen.

With the arrival of energy based liposuction devices such as Smartlipo Triplex, VASERlipo and BodyTite, skilled plastic surgeons can provide safe and effective body sculpting, with minimal complications and optimal results. The new study will surely encourage more people to undergo body contouring and benefit from an improved appearance.

A traditional as well as advanced liposuction procedure doesn’t affect one’s ability to gain or lose weight. However, future weight gain may change your final result; so it is necessary to exercise regularly and follow a balanced diet after the procedure. The results of liposuction surgery can be long-lasting if you follow all these tips along with the surgeon’s instructions.
