Rhytidectomy (Facelift Surgery)

Early signs of ageing can be disheartening for most individuals. Appearance of loose flabby skin, stretch marks, folds and deep creases on the face tend to weaken one’s self confidence. There are many constructive surgical options available, which can restore youthfulness to the face and body. Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is an excellent option for those who wish to look fresh and healthy.

Different Facelift Surgery Options

Neck lift is suitable for those who show signs of mild aging, which are restricted to the neck. It is not opted frequently as the scars behind the ear tend to become thick. Thinning of the upper lip can be treated by injecting fat grafts or by implantation of Alloderm graft. Fat grafts can also be injected to soften the deep laugh lines that tend to appear between the nose and the corner of the mouth. Facelift surgery does not eliminate laugh lines completely. Several injections of fat graft may be necessary for permanent fat buildup as longevity of fat grafts cannot be predicted.

For those who have a weak chin, a chin implant is the solution. With this, the procedure of face lift is complete. Eye lid plasty is an option for those who have fat pouches on the upper and lower eyelid. Browlift can be done for sagging eyebrows, deep vertical furrows between the eyebrows and horizontal creases on the forehead. Incisions are made on either side and are hidden behind the scalp. The forehead and eyebrows are lifted and anchored to the bone with dissolvable fixation devices. Eyelid incisions required for eyelid improvement (blepharoplasty) are hidden in the natural creases of the eyelid.

Complications occur only rarely in a facelift. Hematoma occurs in less than 2 % of the individuals who undergo the surgery. It does not affect the expected result or outcome of the surgery. Occurrence of infection, eye irritation, slow healing or scarring is generally uncommon. Similarly, facial nerve injury accompanied by weakness in certain parts of the face is rare.

Recovery and After Care

Certain precautions need to be taken prior and after a facelift. Smoking can interfere with blood supply and result in skin loss. Smoking should be avoided for at least 3 weeks prior to the surgery. Gum containing nicotine should also be restricted.

Facelift is an outpatient procedure. This procedure is performed in approximately 3 hours at bodySCULPTŪ , all-inclusive surgical center in Manhattan, New York City (NYC). The duration of surgery varies from one individual to another. Other factors such as the gravity of the case, and age can affect the time needed for completion of the surgery.
